RoboCup in Queensland

RoboCup Junior Queensland is part of a global robotics education initiative inspiring students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on, real-world challenges.

For over 25 years, RoboCup Junior has supported students across Queensland to design, build, and program fully autonomous robots, developing technical skills alongside creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. The program is open to all schools and experience levels, from first-time participants through to advanced teams.

Each year, students take part in a range of challenges including Soccer, Rescue, OnStage, and Sumo, progressing through regional and state competitions as part of the wider national and international RoboCup community.

RoboCup Junior Queensland is designed to be accessible and inclusive. There are no restrictions on robotics platforms, allowing teams to use LEGO, Arduino, Micro:bit, or custom-built systems. With low barriers to entry, structured learning pathways, and strong support for educators, the program enables schools from metropolitan and regional communities alike to participate.

Through workshops, resources, and a connected network of educators and volunteers, RoboCup Junior Queensland provides meaningful opportunities for students to engage with STEM in a practical and inspiring way.

Today, the program engages over 1,000 students across Queensland each year, contributing to a growing national community of more than 5,000 students and 500 educators involved in RoboCup Junior across Australia.

QLD Entry League: Sumo

Build an autonomous robot that competes in robot sumo matches by detecting and pushing opponents out of
the arena. Sumo is a beginner-friendly challenge designed to help students get started with robotics before progressing to the RoboCup Junior leagues. We also offer intermediate and open leagues, particularly for students who wish to explore 3D-printing and custom builds.

All details for our Sumo competition can be found at https://www.robocupjunior.org.au/rcjq-sumo/
